Irvin Brandon covered his head with a hood to fight off the wind on the banks of the Walnutport Canal Saturday.

Too bad the trout had nothing to fight off Brandon, who had pulled in four by mid-morning Saturday as he and two friends fished on the canal. They were among the thousands of anglers who journeyed to the creeks, rivers and ponds of the Lehigh Valley on the opening day of trout season for the Southeast Region of Pennsylvania.

While fishermen abounded throughout the Lehigh Valley, many anglers said the numbers were down from last year's opening day, which took place during frigid weather.

Perhaps Saturday's winds, with gusts of about 45 mph, or the cloudy, overcast conditions had something to do with the lower turnout. But the hearty souls who ventured into the Valley's waterways found them running relatively dark, high and fast from the rains of Thursday and Friday, making conditions less than ideal.

  1. Hey I'm a relatively new fly-fisher - especially in this area. Do you recommend a good place to drop in the Wissahickon? What fly's do you recommend for early morning?

  2. Sorry, I've never fished the Wissahickon Creek. Wish I had some better info for you. Have you tried asking folks on one of the forums like paflyfish.com or paanglers.com ? If you ask around, somebody on one of those boards might be able to point you in the right direction.
