The Stony Creek Anglers will be holding an open house this Sunday, July 18th, at their Nursery located within the Norristown Farm Park grounds. The open house is open to the public, and it's a great opportunity to learn a little bit more about the organization, the nursery operation, as well as check out the latest batch of trout fingerlings.

Looking Through the Blackberry

Earlier this past Saturday afternoon, I had taken Lilly by the SCA trout nursery to drop some things off.  It was the first time Lilly was there and all she wanted me to do was catch a fish with my hands from the runway like I was a bear or something.  Kids are funny.

I was flipping through my Blackberry this morning and forgot that I had one of the guys take a pic of Lilly & I in front of the giant wooden trout carving out front.  Just thought I'd share.
Man...she's gettin' big (& heavy)

Trout carving is by local artist Mike Wood; he was featured in a recent article found here:

Stony Creek Anglers 2010 Trout Tournament

Last weekend was the 13th annual trout tournament on the Stony Creek, hosted by the Stony Creek Anglers.  As a member of the club, I didn't do any fishing, but instead helped with setup & stocking, as well as worked in the merchandise booth on both Saturday & Sunday.
A view from below the step dam

Saturday was an awesome day, the weather was beautiful & sunny, and the turnout was great.  Sunday...well, not so much.  It was rainy & chilly for most of the morning, and only the die-hard of anglers showed up.  Those that did show up either day were treated to some well stocked water - as almost 2500 trout were stocked in total, several over 20" in length.  The largest fish of the weekend was 26.5" and almost 9 pounds!
The kiddie pool was a hub of activity all weekend

Despite Sunday's rain, all was well that ended well, and the we raised a nice sum of money to help support the club's trout nursery, streambank improvement projects, and initiatives within the community.
Several physically challenged groups from the area also participated in the fishing fun

Last but not least, here's a short video I took of some of Saturday's action.

Note: All of the photos & video above were taken with my new Kodak Playsport video camera.  I'll probably do a full write up on the camera later, but for only $150, I think it's a pretty nice little HD camera...and yes, it's waterproof too!

A Successful 2010 Stony Creek Clean Up

Yesterday, I was among a group of volunteers who took to the Stony Creek in Norristown as part of a mass clean-up effort in anticipation of next Saturday's opening day of trout season.

Despite the cold morning temperatures, there was a really nice turnout.  Several community groups including Boy Scout troops and a group of students from Temple University also came in to lend a hand.  Thankfully, the creek and it's surroundings was much cleaner than in year's past; we (only) re-claimed a dumpster's worth of trash from the creek.  Most of what I found on my stretch of the creek were empty beer cans, snack wrappers, and bait containers, but a group did come across an entire backseat bench from what appeared to be a mini-van.

Following the clean up, the Stony Creek Anglers brought some helpful folks back to the trout nursery to assist with the stocking of the Stony & Kepner Creeks.  The Stony should be well stocked for opening day weekend.

Senator John Rafferty also stopped by the nursery during the stocking efforts to visit and take a spin in the club's new John Deere Gator, which was obtained through a grant he helped the club obtain.

The Greater Philadelphia Outdoor Sportshow

I took some time and went down to the Greater Philadelphia Outdoor Sportshow this afternoon.  It was the first year of this show, although there have been somewhat similar shows in Valley Forge and Fort Washington in years past.

I will say something - the organizers did very good job filling the expo hall with vendors.  The place was packed with representatives of all kinds of stuff - equipment manufacturers & retailers, outfitters, lodges, charters, outdoors clubs...you name it.  There was probably a bit of debate on who the headliner was...Bassmaster champ Kevin VanDam signed autographs on Friday night, but I think the true star was Brody the Bear.

Despite all of the stuff there, there wasn't a whole lot that interested me too much.  A lot of it was hunting (which I don't do), and a lot of the fishing tackle on display or for sale was either bass or saltwater.  There was some lighter freshwater gear, but most of it was "garden variety," in otherwords nothing notable to a gear-head like me.

Two booths I did stop by were Wild Water Fly Fishing (based out of NY) and Kennebec Lure Company (based out of ME).

Wild Water Fly Fishing was offering some pretty inexpensive fly rods that without casting them, at least seemed to be pretty nice quality for the price.  One rod in particular called the Wild Country caught my eye.  It's a short (5'-6") 4-piece 3-weight that I thought might be nice for some of the brushy creeks I fish.  Didn't buy one, but am storing that in the back of my mind perhaps for a later date.

Kennebec Lure Company was really one of the only manufacturers of spoons & spinners that I noticed.  The spinners seemed solid, and looked like they'd catch fish.  Of course, I didn't get any wet, but thought they were nice regardless.  Was talking to a gentleman there (don't recall his name), and he mentioned they also offer free shipping on any web orders over $20, so he wasn't in full in-your-face salesman mode, which was also nice.

My trout club, the Stony Creek Anglers also had a booth there.  We were lucky to be near Brody the Bear, so foot traffic was really brisk for the few hours I hung out in the booth.  Most people that stopped by were already familiar with the club and our annual tournament, but I did help give out some maps and fliers to the folks that weren't.  Heck, I even sold a couple of SCA t-shirts & patches, which if you didn't make it to the show, you can find right HERE(Hint Hint)

24th Annual Stony Creek Cleanup

The Stony Creek Anglers will be hosting the 24th Annual Stony Creek Clean Up on Saturday, March 27th, 2010. This is truly a worthwhile event, as dumpsters of trash and discarded items are reclaimed from the Stony Creek each year in anticipation for opening day weekend - a big win for both the Stony Creek Watershed, the Borough of Norristown, and trout fisherman alike!

Feeling Lucky?

My trout club is selling raffle tickets as part of a fundraiser for our upcoming trout tournament, youth programs, & nursery upkeep.

Tickets are cheap, the payout is good, and since I'm the club treasurer  you know I'll get you the dough when you win (which I'm sure you will).  So are you feeling lucky?

Raffle tickets are available online at stonycreekanglers.org

Stony Creek Videos

Thought I'd post a collection of Stony Creek videos I've assembled (for the SCA website) from various online sources.  Not all were shot by me, actually most were not, but regardless they all show the Stony & Kepner Creeks and some of the fishing that goes on there.  I hope to add more videos to this over the next year or so, so if you like what you see, check back often.

2010 Greater Philadelphia Outdoor Sportshow

Every year for the past few, I've taken Lilly to the Sportsmen's show in Valley Forge. (2008 & 2009) Unfortunately, attendance at the past year's show was so poor (even by the exhibitors), I guess the powers that be decided to kill it.

Luckily, a new Expo Center opened recently in Oaks, and next year a new outdoors show will be held in February. More or less the Valley Forge & Reading shows are getting folded into this one, so it should be BIG.

Also, after skipping the past year's Valley Forge show, the SCA will have two tables at the new show, so I'm doubly excited.

Here's the flier I recently picked up at French Creek Outfitters.

It's So Easy...

...a caveman can do it.

Was served up this ad on ESPN.com today. Despite the fact that I'm a member of trout nursery and have been known to go fishing for stocked trout, I think this actually is pretty funny. Gotta love those pelletheads.

Kepner Creek Streambank Restoration

On Saturday, July 18th, the Stony Creek Anglers held their annual Adopt-A Stream Project near the High Arch Bridge over Kepner Creek. Under the supervision of the PA Fish & Boat Commission, we created a shot rock & log bank extension/fish habitat.

Besides tossing literally tons of rock down the hill, I assisted in digging the trench for the left support, and it was amazing some of the stuff that was coming out of the ground. Not only old chunks of stone & asphalt, but bricks, ceramic, and iron too, as this particular bank was a site for demolished building materials from previous structures on the Norristown State grounds.

It was an fun (but tiring) project.
Some pictures are below, I think I'm resting in most of them...

Blue Trout

Just posting a pic. My trout club (the Stony Creek Anglers) has a blue trout at the nursery.

They're pretty rare genetic mutation of a rainbow trout that gets it's color from a thyroid abnormality. Blue trout are infertile, so you can't intentionally breed them, it's luck of the draw.

Unfortunately, no word on any unicorns or chupacabra sightings (yet)...

23rd Annual Stony Creek Clean-Up

The 23rd Annual Stony Creek Clean-Up is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2009 - 8AM to Noon. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Fire Chief’s Memorial Band Shell in Elmwood Park, Norristown, PA .

Last year's clean up had the largest turnout ever as 172 volunteers filled a 20 yard dumpster to the brim! Some large items removed included a piano, 2 sofas, 4 bikes, 1 wagon, 40 tires and a sizable pile of scrap metal!

The Stony Creek Anglers will supply gloves & bags. The Norristown Maenner-Chor Club will provide lunch. Starbucks will supply coffee & donuts. The Borough of Norristown will supply a dump truck & driver. Louis Mascaro & Sons will supply dumpsters. The King of Prussia Home Depot will supply other materials. We always need vans & pick ups to get the volunteers to different sections of the Creek.

It is a Rain or Shine Event! Please dress according to the weather and bring boots & waders.

This year's clean up will be in memory of Forrest (Woody) Miller and Janice Kizina.

New Stony Creek Anglers Website

One of my New Year's resolutions was to be more active in 2009. With the news and subsequent treatment of K.C.'s breast cancer last summer/fall/winter, a lot of things (rightly so) got put on hold. No real family vacations, projects around the house went undone, most free time was spent playing catch up, taking Lilly to soccer, or stealing a few minutes of rest.

Well a month or so into this year, we've spun the family 180 degrees, and we're off to a good start. First off, it appears as if the toughest part of K.C.'s journey is coming to an close. Chemo is over, and her hair is already starting to grow back! We've already booked a week long vacation in March to "do Disney" for Lilly's birthday, K.C. & I both joined a gym, Lilly is finally going to get potty trained, the awful wallpaper in the front of our house is coming down this weekend (pictured at left, one of my Valentine's Day gifts to K.C., and BTW that picture was taken before we bought the house, that creepy cat on the wall is NOT ours), and I actually started attending Stony Creek Anglers meetings.

I joined the SCA the beginning of last year. It's funny, I lived in Norristown for the better part of like 6 or 7 years and didn't join until I moved to Limerick. I had good intentions of participating...but let's just say I got "distracted"... This year, I started going to meetings, and wanted to find a way to do something to help the club out. Ray the Treasurer had mentioned he wanted to find a way to collect dues online...one thing led to another...and I ended up in the role of managing & maintaining the SCA website. The new website launched this week. It's only in it's infancy, but check it out if you have a spare minute.

Stony Creek Anglers 2009 Trout Tournament

I went to the Stony Creek Anglers monthly meeting last week and picked up a flyer for the 12th annual trout tournament. I scanned it and posted below (click each to enlarge).

The tournament will be Saturday & Sunday, April 5th & 6th on Stony Creek, located in the Norristown Farm Park / Norristown State Hospital grounds. It should be a good time, especially for kids. Proceeds go toward the operation of the SCA trout nursery, as well as club-sponsored youth programs.

Stony Creek - 11/29/08

So, word on the street was that the Stony Creek Anglers were doing some trout stocking of Stony & Kepner Creeks on Black Friday. Word was true, but unfortunately I was working on Black Friday (oh, the perils of internet retail), so I didn't get a chance to check it out. Plus Lilly has developed a case of the croup, so needed to get home as soon after work as possible to help hold down the fort.

That being said, I did decide to give it a go this (Saturday) morning. Lilly was up all night coughing, so I didn't get much good sleep on Friday night getting up to comfort her and put her back down. I can't really complain though because she's been so miserable with the constant coughing...what a trooper. Anyway, because of that I didn't get as early a start as I wanted to and by the time I got to Stony Creek, most of the good holes were already manned.

I did manage a little fishing, but came up zeros on this brisk 30-degree morning. I don't feel that bad about it though, it was nice to get away from the hustle & bustle of holiday retail for a change and just enjoy the sounds of the riffles breaking around my waders. Plus I did take some (poor) pictures of some Golden Rainbow Trout. Some tough glare so all you can really make out is the silhouettes. Some people call them Palominos, but they actually are golden rainbows. There were two of them kinda hanging out with each other the whole time - where ever the big one went - the little one followed. It was kind of fun just watching them for a little bit even though I wasn't doing much fishing. Also took a quick movie below.
